The decision whether to close Town services due to inclement weather or another emergency will be made by a designated selectman after consulting with the Road Commissioner or Police Chief. The Board of Selectmen shall select the member responsible for this duty. If the Board fails to designate a member or if the designated member was unavailable, three members of the Board would need to agree.
The designated Selectman will notify the effected Town Department Heads (normally the Business Office, Code Enforcement and Transfer Station), prior to 7:00 a.m. in the event of a closure. The Department Heads will then call the individual employees. The Selectman will also have at least two radio and television stations notified. Employees not notified by 7:30 a.m. shall assume that there has been no closure.
The choice to travel in inclement weather shall be an individual's decision. Employees that feel that it is too hazardous to travel or if work has been canceled may elect to use earned vacation, compensation time or may take the time off without compensation.
If closed, employees may be allowed to work with the Department Head's approval. Employees will earn no additional time off or pay if they decide to work.
Public Safety Employees are required to work regardless of weather (normally the Highway, Police and Fire & Rescue Departments) do not receive additional time off or pay for a closure.
This procedure will be followed if closing prior to opening or early closing.
This policy has been enacted with the safety of both Town Residents and Town Employees in mind.
