The General Assistance program in Maine is administered by each municipality for the immediate aid of persons who are unable to provide basic necessities essential to maintain themselves or their families. Basic necessities are defined as food, shelter, utilities and heating fuel. General Assistance is a program of last resort and is available to help people who are not eligible for any other assistance program. Applicants have the burden of proving that they are eligible for general assistance.
