Proper Disposal of Prescription Drugs
You may have seen something on the news or in the paper lately about the dangerous effects of prescription drugs accumulating in the waters of our State.  Many people flush their unused prescriptions down the toilet without a second thought.  These prescriptions enter the groundwater and find their way into our streams, rivers, ponds, and lakes, where they can accumulate to dangerous levels.  These drugs affect the health of our environment and especially our fisheries.  Across the country, some fish have been found with both male and female sex organs due to high concentrations of hormone treatment medications, while others seem sluggish or have other symptoms of drug pollution.  It is best to keep these drugs out of the food chain.

The best thing to do with your unused prescription drugs is to remove the label or cover up your personal information with a black marker or pen, place the vial in your household trash so that it is not visible through the bag, and set it out for curbside pickup as usual.  Wrapping your prescription vials inside other trash is a good way to keep them from being visible through the bag.  Visible prescription drug vials may attract unwanted attention from certain members of the public.  You can also drop your prescription drugs off at the Transfer Station to be disposed of in our MERC bin.  Buxton’s curbside trash is incinerated at the MERC facility in Biddeford.  Incineration is the safest disposal method for unused drugs.  Hypodermic needles should be returned to your physician, hospital, or treatment center for proper disposal.  Needles may also be disposed of at the Transfer Station if brought in a puncture proof container such as a laundry detergent jug.  If you have any questions about waste disposal, contact the Buxton Transfer Station at 929-3913, or by e-mail at buxtonts@sacoriver.net.
