Medical waste is considered hazardous waste and should be disposed of through your medical care provider. Certain medical treatments such as radiation therapy, thyroid medication, and other situations can produce enough radioactive residue to set off the radiation dectectors at the MERC incinerator in Biddeford. This will lead to significant extra costs imposed on the Town which may be passed on to the individual responsible for this improper disposal.
Disposing of hazardous or biological waste through curbside pick-up is a violation of Buxton’s Solid Waste Ordinance. Section 6.1 of the Solid Waste Ordinance allows the Town of Buxton to impose fines and recover costs for any violation of the Ordinance.
