If a taxpayer feels their property was assessed incorrectly, there is an appeal process to go through.

  1. Taxpayer fills out a “Request for Assessment Review”.  This form can be found at the Tax Collectors desk at Town Hall.Taxpayer will have to bring in proof that their assessment is incorrect.  Example:  Their house is not in good condition; taxpayer takes pictures of their house showing the condition.  Another example is the property card or online information states it has 3 bathrooms, but it only has 2.  The Request for Assessment Review is turned into Tax Collector. When the assessor returns late September early October, he will review the Request for Assessment Review forms. Do not wait to pay your taxes because interest will be charged and due.
  2. The "Request Assessment Review" is reviewed by the assessor and deemed approved or denied. If approved, taxpayer will receive the adjustment. If denied, the taxpayer receives a letter stating they were denied and they have 60 days from the date of the letter to appeal to York County Commission. The letter will give the address to appeal to York County Commission.
  3. York County Commissioner is in Alfred, Maine. Assessor and taxpayer will meet with York County Commissioner to discuss their assessments. Taxpayer will have to bring in proof that their assessment is incorrect. If approved, taxpayer will receive an adjustment from the Town of Buxton. If denied, taxpayer will receive instructions on how to take appeal to York County Superior Court if they wish to pursue the appeal.
  4. York County Superior Court – Taxpayer will have to show proof that their assessment is incorrect. If denied this is the end of process. If appeal is granted an abatement would be issued.
